What Is Mót Hoi An and Why Is It So Popular?

- Key ingredients: Lemongrass, lime, ginger, cinnamon, licorice, monk fruit, honeysuckle, chrysanthemum, green tea, lotus, jujube and honey.
- Herbal roots: The drink is adapted from a traditional family herbal formula said to be more than 100 years old.
Mót Hoi An Herbal Tea has a refreshing citrusy taste at first, followed by mild herbal bitterness and aromatic notes. The herbs are brewed slowly, with honey added after heating, while fresh lime is squeezed into each cup individually. Served cold in a paper cup, each drink is commonly finished with a lotus petal, chrysanthemum bud or tea leaf and a dried-reed straw. This combination of a traditional Vietnamese herbal recipe and a light, refreshing format makes Mót particularly suited to sipping while walking through Hoi An Ancient Town.

Why is it so popular? The story behind Mót Hoi An
Mót Hoi An grew from a traditional Vietnamese herbal formula that had been used by the founder’s family for more than 100 years. In 2015, Nguyễn Hữu Xuân, known as “Mót”, began serving the drink from his family address at 150 Tran Phu Street. His idea was simple: turn the family herbal blend into a refreshing takeaway drink that visitors could enjoy while exploring the Ancient Town, rather than preparing the herbs at home.
Mót has remained at the same address instead of expanding into multiple branches, keeping the drink closely tied to its original Hoi An setting. Its pale herbal tea, paper cup, reed straw and lotus or chrysanthemum garnish have also become instantly recognisable parts of the Mót experience.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Mót Hoi An?

- For fewer crowds: Visit earlier in the day, especially if you want to avoid queues.
- During hot weather: The chilled herbal drink can be a refreshing stop while exploring the Old Town.
